Rectal stimulants have a direct stimulating effect on the network of nerves in the large intestine and
reduce absorption of water and electrolytes from gastrointestinal contents.
The stimulants provide not only chemical stimulation but localized mechanical stimulation as well as lubrication to promote elimination of stool. Suppositories usually act within 15 minutes to one hour. Dulcolax® Stimulants: This contains a medication that is absorbed by the lining of the large bowel and stimulates a strong involuntary wave-like movement that facilitates elimination of stool.
